What is the purpose of landscape grading?

The purpose of landscape grading is primarily to control water drainage and improve the overall appearance of the site. Proper grading involves shaping the land to direct water runoff away from structures and prevent pooling in areas where it could cause erosion or damage to plants and soil. This process not only facilitates adequate drainage by creating a slope that allows water to flow efficiently but also enhances the aesthetic value of the landscape by creating defined areas for planting, walking paths, and outdoor living spaces.

While increasing the slope of the landscape may be a part of grading, it is not the sole purpose. Compaction of the soil, though it might occur as a part of preparing the site, is not a goal of grading practices. Furthermore, eliminating all vegetation would not be considered beneficial; maintaining some degree of vegetation is usually desired for ecological balance and site appearance. Therefore, controlling water drainage and improving site appearance encapsulates the full intent of landscape grading.
