The term "leader" refers to the main axis stem of a plant, which is critical for its growth and development. This central stem is responsible for the upward and outward growth of the plant, as it supports the main branches and facilitates the overall structure. The leader is essential in determining the tree's form and can influence factors like height and canopy spread.

In many trees, the leader helps guide the plant's resources to the uppermost parts, ensuring that the plant can reach sufficient sunlight for photosynthesis. A well-defined leader is important for stability and growth, as it contributes to the tree's ability to withstand various environmental stresses.

Understanding what a leader is and its role in plant structure aids in practices such as pruning and training trees for optimal growth and aesthetic appeal in landscaping. This knowledge is particularly valuable for landscape contractors who need to manage the health and development of plants effectively.
